Joe Zaffuto

Joe Zaffuto was born and raised in a small town in Central Pennsylvania where he tried his hand at night calling at a very young age. He was only 14 when he called in and killed his first grey fox – a night he still remembers well!  He was using his brother’s cassette tape recorder wired to an old car speaker, playing the tune of a crying rabbit. With his Ithaca 12 gauge in one hand and a flashlight covered in red cellophane in the other, he still remembers the glow of those red eyes getting closer and closer, his heart pounding faster and faster. Balancing the shotgun on his knee, trying to hold the light, and getting the shotgun bead between those red approaching eyes took some doing. He took a deep breath, squeezed the trigger, and ended up on his back. After recovering, he walked out 20 yards to find his first predator kill, a nice prime Pennsylvania grey fox. From that point on he was hooked and now 40 plus years later he still targets predators willing to come to the call with their eyes glowing from his now “much better” red lights – still feeling that same passion he felt back then. Although he has upgraded his hunting equipment and changed his style, the concept is still basically the same. Joe finds coyotes are much more challenging to call in than fox and feels every coyote called in and killed is a true trophy. Last season, while using Night Eyes Hunting Lights from his own company, Joe called in numerous fox and coyotes harvesting over 100 of them. This is an extraordinary feat given that most of his calling was during a 2 1/2 month period, with the majority of it being in the state of Pennsylvania.

”Joe recently retired from a 28-year career in Law Enforcement where he was a certified firearms instructor. He has given seminars on calling predators at night throughout the northeast United States for several years now and has written articles for Fur-Fish-Game and Woods & Water magazines. In 2017 and 2018 Joe was featured on three TV episodes that aired on the Pursuit Channel. In his latest episode Joe and his partner killed 18 predators in three nights of filming.

Joe is always willing to provide hunting strategies to those who are willing to listen.  He feels very privileged to have been instrumental in helping get thousands of new hunters started into the night hunting sport and he loves to hear their success stories that follow. Night hunting still calls to Joe as strongly today as it did on that first fateful night-time fox hunt, many years ago.

Capt. Brian Rice

As a kid, Brian began fishing on the Navesink River, using a pair of oars to row a 12-foot aluminum boat and catch snapper blues, weak fish and other small fish teaming the river. Eventually, he graduated to a 16-foot Garvey boat and began bunker chunking for striped bass under the Highlands Bridge in the late ‘80s, when the striped bass population was just starting to rebuild after being decimated from over-fishing. But the bass were still scarce, and catching even one per day was a success. However, the tough fishing honed his skills, forcing him to refine his methods to hook up.

Brian also started trolling on his boat for stripers, and these experiences developed the techniques he uses today to charter for trophy linesiders, which is one of his specialties. In addition, Brian began fishing offshore for big game in the early 90s, earned his captain’s license in 2004, and has presently (almost) fished everywhere from the entire Northeast Coast to the Bahamas and Mexico. Captain Brian is proven tournament winner, placing in the top five in nearly every competition Jersey Devil has entered, winning the top prize in some of the events, including first place in 2006 American Striper Association Tournament in the Highlands. Captain Brian is also an accomplished offshore captain who has put many clients on tuna, mahi, sharks and even some marlin off the Jersey coast.

Captain Brian still resides in Fair Haven, NJ with his wife Jacquie, son Jack and daughter Cameron all of which fish and enjoy the waters that Brian has grown up on.
